Senate Republicans Urge Governor Shapiro To Block RGGI
One of the first issues that the Shapiro Administration will face is the Regional Greenhouse Gas House Initiative (RGGI). This cap and trade program was the centerpiece of Governor Wolf’s
environmental policy that was adopted last year by regulation over the strong objections of the legislature.
The regulation is currently tied up in a court challenge.
During the campaign, then candidate Shapiro made public comments expressing doubts regarding some aspects of RGGI, especially its impact on union workers and coal fired power plant communities.
This week, all Republican state Senators signed and sent the following letter urging the new Governor to repeal RGGI.
This action demonstrates the importance of the issue to the Majority Senate Republicans and the response of the Administration will be an early signal as to how the relationship between the Governor and the legislature will proceed.
