PA Senate Advances Bill That Creates Annual Registration Fee For EV’s

This week, the Pennsylvania Senate Transportation Committee reported out Senate Bill 656 (Rothman, R-Cumberland) that would impose an annual fee on owners of electric vehicles.

By a 13-1 vote, the Committee supported the establishment of a $290 fee that would be due with the vehicle’s yearly registration. The measure would also exempt electric vehicles from the Pennsylvania Alternative Energy Tax.

According to the Committee, this current requirement is unknown or ignored by the significant majority of EV owners.
The money generated by the new fee would go to the state’s Motor License Fund to be used for the construction or maintenance of roads and bridges.

The bill now goes to the full Senate for its consideration.
