PPA: Contact Your State Legislator To Support Energy Choice Legislation
Earlier this year Senate Bill 275 was introduced by Senator Gene Yaw (R-Lycoming) to prohibit municipalities from adopting ordinances that would restrict specific energy sources within their jurisdictions.
The PPA initially consulted with Senator Yaw’s staff to confirm that the bill covers heating oil and propane. The PPA then submitted written testimony in May to support the bill.
On October 27, 2021 the Senate passed Senate Bill 275 by a vote of 35 – 15. The bill is now in the House Local Government Committee for consideration.
A similar companion bill (House Bill 1947) was also introduced in the House last month by Rep. Timothy O’Neal (R-Washington) and was reported out of the House Local Government Committee on October 26 and Tabled.
In recent years, there have been reports of local governments in some areas of the country banning fossil fuels (ex: Brookline, MA) within their jurisdiction.
The current language in Senate Bill 275 and House Bill 1947 would prohibit this from happening in Pennsylvania and ensure that consumers have the ability to make their own choices about the energy sources they use in their homes.
The PPA is now asking our membership to contact your local House member to support this important legislation that will ultimately protect your customers!
