PA Senate Set For Early Return On August 30

The State Senate will return to session on Wednesday August 30 to continue work on the yet unfinished state budget process. This marks an early return from the Senate’s summer recess which was scheduled through September 18.

The major part of the spending plan was passed earlier this summer after being delayed past the June 30 deadline due to a breakdown in negotiations among the parties.

Still be completed is passage of bills (such as the Fiscal code) which empowers the actual spending for specific programs. So called “non-preferred “spending (for entities such as Pitt, Penn State, and Temple) is also yet to be approved.

The Senate reportedly will deal with these issues this week. But at this point, it is not clear what the next steps will be. The House is currently evenly split 101-101 between Democrats and Republicans.

Democrats will likely return to 102 after a special election September 18. The House is not currently scheduled to return until the last week of that month. House approval is required to complete the budget process.
